According to media reports on Friday, OpenAI's team focused on studying the survival dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) has all resigned or been absorbed by other groups after the departure of two key leaders.

In an interview, OpenAI confirmed that it no longer treats the so-called "super-aligned" team as a separate entity, but instead integrates the team more deeply into its research work to help the company achieve its security goals.

In July last year, OpenAI announced the establishment of a new research team,"Super Alignment", which will use AI to supervise AI to solve the super-intelligent "AI Alignment" problem. "AI alignment" means that the goals of the AI system are required to be consistent with human values and interests. Ilya Suzkwo, one of the company's founders, was appointed as co-leader of the team.

The current dissolution of the AI risk team is another evidence of the recent turmoil within the company, and has once again raised questions about how the company balances speed and safety when developing AI products. The OpenAI charter stipulates that General Artificial Intelligence (AGI), technology that can rival or surpass humans, must be safely developed.

Last month, two researchers on the Super Alignment team were fired for leaking company secrets, and another member also left in February. On Tuesday, Ilya announced on social platform X that he would leave the company in nearly ten years, believing that under the leadership of CEO Altman and others, he could create a universal artificial intelligence that is both safe and beneficial. Ilya had previously clashed with Altman over the speed of AI development.

Subsequently, Jan Leike, another person in charge of the Super Alignment team, also announced his departure. However, some people familiar with the matter claimed that for Leike, Ilya's withdrawal caused differences to be so serious that they could not be reconciled.

Leike issued a statement on Friday saying the Super Alignment team has been working hard to gain resources. He also said his departure was due to a series of differences with OpenAI over the company's "core priorities" and that he believed the company had not paid enough attention to AI-related security measures.

OpenAI announced on Tuesday that company co-founder John Schulman will become the scientific leader for future alignment efforts. Separately, OpenAI said in a blog post that it has appointed research director Jakub Pachoki to replace Ilya as chief scientist.
